” Why do some species only live in one part of the world, even though there are other environments which could be suitable?

This effect is called the Kangaroo Effect, because kangaroos are found only in Australia. But why are they only found there? There are other parts of the world such as California, South Africa, etc., that can sustain a kangaroo, so why are they in Australia?

There are a lot of factors that can determine this, you have to make sure it is the right climate, there is enough sustainable food there, and most importantly can they reproduce there, and can that offspring keep reproducing healthy offspring. You also have to keep in mind of the predators that might be lurking around, can they fight them?

Discuss the autobiography of Augustus

Augustus was a great political figure of Rome during his time as a influential person of Rome. He was a descendant of Julius Caesar (his great nephew) but Julius Caesar legally makes Augustus his son and heir to his property, riches, etc. Augustus becomes allies with two men, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Mark Antony. They are given an enormous amount of power over the political leaders and end up fighting for all the power for one-self, and Augustus is the triumphant victor in the end.

Now after many wars and battles the Roman people only wanted peace and that put Augustus in a position of two outcomes. He could retire and there would be civil wars all over again and history would repeat its-self, or he could stay in office and rule over Rome and keep the peace to the best of his abilities. So he chooses to stay in office and keep the peace. Now he did not want the backlash that comes with being a powerful dictator so he created an organization called the Augustan Settlement, which would balance out the power of one person even thought he was still the leading official.

Augustus lived a good and happy life, keeping Rome safe and meeting the needs of the people who adored Augustus and eventually gave him the title Princeps which means first citizen of Rome.

In The Aeneid what is the basic story of the epic? Why do you think this great literary work has also been called an exercise in political propaganda?

The Aeneid was written by a man named Virgil, and it talks about the wandering of a Trojan man named Aenias, and how after the Trojan War Rome was destined to be founded by Aenias and it follows his journey of finding his destiny of founding Rome.

At this time Augustus was a praised politician and had actually been the one to encourage Virgil to write a great epic, so of course Virgil was going to include Augustus somehow. Virgil decides to make Augustus a descendant of Aenias and makes him a great ruler of Rome in, The Aenias.

“What would have been Orestes’ proper course of action, had he been living today? Why?”

So we begin in the story called The Libation Bearer’s and Orestes mother has killed her husband Agamemnon with the help of her secret lover. She was cheating on him and did not want anyone to find out about it. While Orestes mother killed her husband, Orestes had been exiled when he had returned his mother and her lover had taken over the city, so in an act of vengeance Orestes killed his mother and her lover and as a result of this Orestes was tormented by the furies.

Orestes could have handled things differently, he could have taken them to court and the penalty of adultery is either exile or death which the husband would have decided for the pair. But seeing that Orestes mother killed Agamemnon it would have been left to the closest family member, which would be Agamemnon.

Instead of killing them Orestes also could have thought things through and could have threatened them at most. She might be out to get him but again he could wave it in her face that she committed adultery and could take her to court for it, that would most likely make the most sense so he would not have to kill anyone.

Why did Tiberius Gracchus attract so much suspicion from the Roman Senate?

Tiberius Gracchus was part of the Roman government and a politician in 133 BC he wanted to change some laws so that more people could join the military because to join the army you needed to own land, and Tiberius wanted to change that. Some people saw this as an act of justice and kindness toward the poor people and did not see a motivation, but the people serving in the senate saw a chance for Tiberius to grow in power and gain the peoples favor so he become a more controlling politician.

Now the ancient Romans followed a very specific law when it came to politics and no one was to break those laws, but Tiberius didn’t care and took his bill to the Concilium Plebis (a Roman assembly that could allow or turn away ideas or laws). His idea passes but they will not fund or lend commission for the idea.

At this time a kingdom had given its-self over to Rome when the king died and Tiberius has the brilliant idea to use the taxes and commission from that kingdom to fund his idea.

Now Tiberius‘s year serving on the senate had come to an end and you were not allowed to re-join the same position that you had already served, but Tiberius elected to join the same spot because he was sure that the senate would not go through with his plan. So in a public place where Tiberius was at there were some spies sent by the senate to check on him. Tiberius sensed danger so he signaled to his guard by putting his hand on his head and the spies mistook it as they thought Tiberius wanted a crown, so Tiberius was killed.

“What was Aeschylus’s view of the Trojan war?”

Aeschylus‘s does not mention the Trojan war much and if he is talking about it or any war he talks about the consequences that come along with it. War wasn’t uncommon in the Greek society while the Greek culture views dying or even just fighting in wars a great honor, Aeschylus is clear that he is not a fan of it.

He sympathizes with the soldiers because for ten years they were away from home their clothes were wearing down, they had to survive long and harsh winters, and they most likely had to find it along the way which especially in winter would be hard. I think it is a miracle that the soldiers didn’t die just from the cold or lack of food.

Now onto the Trojan war, I think everyone knows the story but here is a quick overview. The Trojans and the Greeks are at war and the Greeks had built a giant horse for the Trojans but little did they know the Greeks were hiding inside the horse. The Trojans thought the Greeks had surrendered and brought the horse in thinking it was a peace treaty. So at night when the Trojans were asleep the Greeks got out and went on a rampage and killed everyone soldiers, women, children, it was a bloodbath.

Now that is the story of how the Greeks won the Trojan war and if the ending was this bloody how do you think the rest of the war went? Another thing is that the Trojans were a part of Greece, just a different part of Greece. If Greece fought so violently against their own people how do you think they fought the rest of the world?

War is a time of death, loss, and at times no hope Aeschylus understands this just take a look at many other wars. World war 2 where Hitler killed 60 – 85 million people when he was a dictator. And Stalin started the cold war and he killed around 20 million people. In Aeschylus’s mind war is no time to give honor even to those who have fought bravely.

Describe some of the more complicated “things” that act like organisms but aren’t truly alive. How do these various entities function?

One thing that is not alive but acts like it is alive is a virus. A virus enters your body by however that particular virus spreads it can be through air, physical contact, saliva, ect. Now when the virus enters your body let’s say through the air the virus sends out these things called phages that inject nucleic acids into a cell and then that acid mixes with the DNA and it starts making new proteins for the virus so it can continue to live. It keeps multiplying and spreading to new cells, and keeps making new modified protein infected by the virus, so it can keep living. This is called the Lytic cycle.

There is another cycle called the Lysogenic cycle. In this cycle the phage puts the genome into the cell, but it does not spread instead it just stays in the cell mixing with the genome of the cell, it goes through mitosis and then there are two cells that have the virus inside of them.

Today I am going to be talking about the difference between the liberty of the ancients and the liberty of the moderns, and what moderns would find lacking in ancient liberty.

So first the differences of liberty between the ancients and us today. The ancient Greeks view of liberty was that city was in control of your liberty and freedom. They did not think of freedom as a personal right but they thought of liberty as a whole city. The ancients would have discussions of whether they should go to war or stay at peace, vote for new laws, and examine the records kept by the magistrates, so just from that we learn that basically everything was controlled by the government. Now our view of justice is that we follow the rule of law and not man, we have the rights to express one’s opinion, right to use property as we like, we have the right to go to public places without permission, and we have the right to be with others.

So we see that we have very different opinions on what liberty and justice is. We believe that justice is the rights that one person has or should have, the ancient Greeks believed that the city was a whole and that everyone should obey what the government told them to.

Western Literature Essay 8

In this essay I am going to be talking about what was Hesiod’s view of mankind’s past and future?

Here is the past and what Hesiod believed. It starts with him telling his brother some advice on how to live and he goes back to “creation”. He believed that the gods and mankind came from the same place (how godly can they be?), and then a man named Prometheus tricked Zeus and gave man fire so Zeus got even with man by giving Pandora her box and saying that women are the cause of men’s problems. So then the gods made the races of men in this order gold (men die and are spirits on earth), silver (sinners who did not give to the gods), bronze (lovers of violence and destruction), heroes (demi-gods), and iron (people who work hard). He also believed that Zeus was the most powerful and that he was above all of the other gods. Zeus also had a daughter named justice, who would tell her father about the unjust things man did and Zeus would punish them.

Now we move onto the future. In this segment we see Hesiod telling his brother some more advice but now it is focused on the future and Hesiod is helping Perses (his brother) by telling him how to live. Hesiod tells Perses to get a house, a woman and an ox (to plough), a slave woman and another woman. Hesiod also tells him to work everyday so that he will have crops, he tells him that when Zeus sends autumn working will become easier, but Zeus can also bring poverty so be careful and make sure you are on his good side, and that the seasons govern our work and how lazy we can be. Next he tells him about the care of slaves and animals, he says the man should be 30 when she turns 18 he says to marry a local woman and make sure she has a good reputation.

In all Hesiod does have some things that are helpful, he understands if you don’t work you don’t eat. But his thoughts of other people, work, and religion are wrong.

History Western Civilization Essay 7

Today I am going to be talking about art from ancient Greece, and how the Greek religion is different from the Hebrew religion.

In ancient Greece there were many different periods where different styles were popular.

  1. Geometric style        900-700 BC
  2. Archaic style             700-500 BC
  3. Early classical           480-450 BC
  4. Classical                     450-400 BC
  5. Late classical             400-325 BC
  6. Hellenistic

My favorite time period is the geometric time period. This period had a lot of vases and obviously geometric shapes, there weren’t a lot of sculptures of people during this period of art. The vases had geometric shapes like lines (in various forms), triangles, and things that were important to their religion. Like certain animals and sometimes undetailed people that were blacked out. They also did little sculptures of horses and put small geometric details on them.

Now I am going to talk about the differences of the Greek and Hebrew religion.

There are several gods in the Greek religion such as Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Athena, and many more. In the Hebrew religion there is one God and he is sovereign and has all power.

The homestyle life was very different as well, the Greeks would have one of the lesser gods that they would worship and no other family could worship that god. It was also very private and they would only worship in the home or at a temple for one of the gods that lived on Mount Olympus. The Hebrews would worship the same God and would on one day of the week come and worship together.

Some other differences include:

  1. The gods can be both good and evil, and have the choice to do good and evil. God is good and hates evil.
  2. The gods can die, while God is all powerful, all knowing, created this world just by speaking and can take it away just as quickly.
  3. The gods have children by sexual inter-course, while God does have a son, Jesus is God in a human form.
  4. The gods have no justice system, and even if they make a rule they stray from it. God has a justice system in place and sticks to it.

“What are the main differences between Genesis 1 and Theogony?”

The Theogony it is about the origin of the Greek gods, how they came to be, and what they are like. Similarly Genesis is about the beginning of the world but not about God himself and this is the very first difference.

In the Theogony it talks about how there was Earth and Uranus (the heaven) and that they married and had six sons and six daughters who were Titans. Now Cronus was the smallest of all his siblings and he resented that, so he overthrew his father and became king.

There were no other females other than their sisters so this is where it becomes very gross and confusing. Cronus married his sister Rhea and they had seven children, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Demeter, and Chiron (who is a centaur). There was a prophecy that one of Cronus children would overthrow him and have ultimate power, and to try and oppose it Cronus ate all of his children except Zeus because Rhea fed him a rock instead. So Zeus grew up and overthrew his father and sent him to Tartarus which is where all monsters live.

So if we move to Genesis 1 God was already there he was not created because he has sovereign power and does not need anyone. There is also only one God and he has power over everything.

So God spoke and there was light he separated it from darkness and he saw it was good, then he spoke and he created water and land he saw it was good. Then the next day he made plants and vegetation, then he made the sun moon and stars, he made sea creatures and creatures that fly, then livestock and creeping creatures, then on the sixth day he created man and he saw that it was good.

Here are some of the main differences:

  1. The gods can be both evil and good, while we see that God is good and nothing more
  2. There is obviously a difference in numbers there are several gods in the Theogony, while in the Bible there is only one.
  3. The gods can die and if they were truly gods then they would not be able to die. We see that God can make everything by just speaking and he can take it away just as quickly.
  4. The gods have children that came to be by sexual inter-course, God does have a son but his son is God.
  5. There isn’t really a justice system for the gods, one is king and the rest are just there. God has a justice system and he sticks to it.
