History Essay 24

(1) Based on Lesson 117 and the reading, how has it been argued that Woodrow Wilson followed a double standard in his treatment of the British hunger blockade and the German submarine warfare? What policy did he take regarding Americans sailing on ships flying belligerent flags?

Woodrow Wilson had become President of the United States from 1913-1921. He brought America into World War I after countless attacks through German submarine warfare grounds, which was just an excuse to go to war. Woodrow Wilson definitely had a double standard when it came to the British and the Germans punishment. The British set up a hunger blockade, which deprived Germany much of its food, leading to the people only eating potatoes and turnips. After Britain set up the hunger blockade Germany fought back with submarine warfare firing at any British ship, whether it was armed or not. Wilson claimed that he wanted, “Peace without victory.” After the war had finished Germany was split up and left to defend themselves.

(2) How have some historians argued that the peace settlement at the end of World War I helped pave the way for World War II?

World War I ended when the Big Four (Britain, America, Italy and France) had come together in Paris to talk about peace to end the war, which is why it is called the Paris Peace Conference. Some historians think that this conference think this was the reason why World War II happened. Germany had been split up between France, Poland and Italy. Austria had become a German speaking country and was not allowed to join Germany, many historians believed that this angered Germany enough to lead to World war II.

(1) What are the values of Modernism that we see reflected across different fields, and how do they represent a departure from neoclassicism and the Enlightenment?

Before Modernism began in the late 19th century, The Enlightenment started in the 17th century, it rejected the idea of God and began to put faith in science, reason and intellectual understanding of the physical world. Neoclassicism was wide spread and also widely accepted. Neoclassicism thought of the world as a place of reason and order, it was thought that eventually everything could be learned over a certain period of time. Modernism put reason and order away, claiming that the world is not as orderly as we thought, with random things seemingly to happen for no reason at all. In science some laws were not followed anymore and new discoveries were found that helped further advance the field. In the arts order was not followed, such as a structure to a story or the way sentences were written. Artists began to paint with their own interpretation of the world as cameras were able to photograph a scene perfectly.

(2) What factors contributed to the coming of World War I?

The coming of World War I isn’t exactly simple, with numerous details that can easily make this story a longer one than necessary. In 1894 Russia and France made an alliance with each other, as the Germans were pushing Britain closer towards France with its foreign policy. Germany made it’s greatest enemy this way with the three of them fighting against Germany. From 1908-1909 during the Bosnian crisis, Russia was forced to back down due to the Serbs wanting to go to war with Austria. Germany and Britain began a race where each other was forced to produce large amounts of arms, only escalating the situation further.

(1) What was the Kulturkampf?

When German politics were being carried out by the Prussian Prime Minister, Otto van Bismark, he was decreasing the power of the Roman Catholic Church in Prussia in order to change directions of where the country was heading as a whole. Kulturkampf, which translated into English means, culture battle, implies the struggle against the Roman Catholic Church and Otto van Bismark.

(2) Discuss the arguments advanced in favor of and against the British Empire in the two articles you read.

When the British Empire came to the island of Diego Garcia to make a military base for the U.S army in 1970, they brought science and technology to the island that they could never have dreamed about. Advancements were being made to the island and it was claimed that because of this peace, unity, security and stability was brought to the island. If you are willing to overlook the absolutely horrific abuse, attacks and murder, then the island is off far better than it was before.

In 1970 to create the military base, British authorities evicted 1,500 islanders. 8,800 private accounts that held information dealing with the abuse and murder of the islanders, and tortures on the Mau Mau insurgents were overlooked by many people and ultimately the islands civilization was destroyed. If you must use violence and threaten people with power, to advance the civilization in a scientific, and medical way then I believe that the civilization was better off before the radical improvements were made.

(2) Discuss the significance of two of the major innovations of the Second Industrial Revolution.

During the Second Industrial Revolution many new things were invented, the Bessemer process was invented which caused steel to become less expensive and have higher quantities then before. Advances were made in chemistry, such as dyes, chemicals and plastics. However I believe that one of the most significant advances was made through Thomas Edison’s lightbulb.. The lightbulb allowed light to be shone over large areas, and it was probably much safer in towns to walk around at night. The other significant invention was the telephone that allowed people to talk over long distances without needing to send a telegraph. New ways of transportation were also being invented such as the bicycle and automobiles, which could take you much farther than a bicycle or horse could.
