Government 1A Essay 9

Pick any chapter in How to Argue, and write 250 words on this: “How could voluntary arrangements solve this problem if the state did not impose the politics of plunder?”

“The government can do it cheaper because it doesn’t have to make a profit.”

Oh, the hypocrisy of this statement. Something that people seem to not understand about the free market is its purpose. The free market exists to create competition for product manufacturers and businesses. This competition forces manufacturers to not only produce good products but sell them at an affordable price for the public. A rule in the free market is sellers compete against sellers, and buyers compete against buyers. It is never a buyer against the seller because both want to make an exchange. However, there are exceptions, some people will pay a high price no matter the reason. That is a small portion of the public and can not be applied to the majority. If a business sells its product at a high price it will make a small profit but have a higher loss.

With all this to say, where would the government get the funding for its production? If you answered, taxes, you have won my friend! If government production costs us higher taxes when the free market requires manufacturers to produce by themselves, how is the government not making a profit? Government production is an inefficient way of producing when we could have the same goods, for a cheaper price.

“If you had heard these two sermons, would you have assumed that you were the target? Why or why not?”

Johnathan Edwards and George Whitefield were priests during the first awakening in the 18th century. Both men would preach as they went around the American colonies trying to convince people of their eternal damnation. During their travels, they would preach in front of thousands of people, having a major impact on them at the time.

George Whitefield’s’ usual sermon was “Marks of a True Conversion” opening with Matthew 18:3. “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Whitefield’s sermon was directed towards the Christians who had been converted as children and grew up in a Christian household. Whitefield did not believe that it was enough to have been baptized, tithe, do good deeds for your neighbor, and have devotion towards God to enter heaven. He did not believe that people were doing enough to please God and were on their way to hell. Whitefield however, did not explain why the people were not doing enough. Furthermore, he did not tell them what they needed to do to save their souls.

Jonathan Edwards’ sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, is one that sticks out to people, with no surprise purely because of how intense his rhetoric is. The way Edwards described God makes me wonder if we are talking about the same religion. This God that Edwards described is full of hatred for all of mankind. God despises us because we are so unholy, disgusting, and vile. God does nothing more than toy with us and in the afterlife, he will continue to play with us as a spider spins her prey in a web. A web of darkness, where we are paralyzed in God’s grasp with fear, regret, and resentment. God will revel in the heinous glory of our gruesome deaths, knowing we have paid our due debt.

I would say that I am the target of these sermons, more so the first sermon. I have grown up in a Christian household and have accepted this faith as a young child. The second sermon is targeted towards those who become fearful easily, those who do not truly understand the purpose of Jesus. Both of these sermons have fundamental issues and are both fearmongering propaganda. Neither of these sermons teaches the word of God. Instead, both men rely on made-up issues that do not have strong backing based on their thesis. While I am the target of these sermons, I refuse to accept them. Neither sermons line up with what Jesus preached. Jesus preached about love and peace, not only called for us to obey what he preached, he wanted us to follow his example. God values justice, this quality is everywhere in the Bible. But God loves us. God does not want to play with us or throw us in hell. God will not rip us off.

Economics Essay 8

“Is a tax-supported school different in principle from a tax-supported church?”

A tax-funded school or a public school has its curriculum decided by the government. With this happening, it means that parents are no longer able to control what their children learn in the schoolrooms. There has always been a fight for the next generation of youth. Whoever controls their ideologies controls the future for many more to come. In public schools, children are told what to think when the objective of school should teach them to think for themselves. If the government can control the next generation or indoctrinate them, they will teach the youth whatever their agenda is to get more votes.

A tax-funded church is similar to a public school the similarities include receiving money from the government to help their organization. However, the United States Supreme Court has stated that religious-based organizations are not allowed to use taxpayers’ dollars to fund their religious practices. (Source: https://www.hhs.gov/answers/grants-and-contracts/what-are-the-rules-on-funding-religious-activity-with-federal-money/index.html ). Churches can use government aid to support their non-religious events and can use charity to fund their church instead.
Churches and schools have different goals in mind when teaching. Churches are there to nurture the souls of the lost, giving them hope where their lives have otherwise been drained of it all.

In comparison, tax-funded schools and churches are fundamentally identical. Both teach their ideas and are provided financial aid from the government. There are some differences between the two institutions that change the dynamic for the general public. Schools target the youth, Churches teach to anyone. Schools focus on teaching more mundane ideas, such as economics, intellect, and basic knowledge. Lastly, the government does not force people to go to Church, where getting an education is mandatory by the state.

I have experience with cleaning and I am willing to take care of the shop in any way. The different types of cleaning I have done includes bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, dusting, sweeping, mopping, polishing silver. I have cleaned for a few houses who have asked me to continue working for them. A few priorities I have while cleaning is that the job is well done, it satisfies the customer and I can get it done efficiently in a timely manner. I also have experience planting flowers with my father. He has taught me how to dig a proper hole and how to appropriately plant the vegetation.

I have experiences unrelated to upkeeping a floral shop but they have helped shape who I am, including my work ethic. I have babysat many times, with and without other people. I have received training from my church that is very informational and requires an extensive amount of knowledge. My experience ranges from all sorts of ages. From infancy to grade school, I love children of all ages. I am currently helping teach a 7-8 year old ballet class. My role as an assistant teacher is to show the correct movement so the girls can follow along with me as the teacher walks around making corrections. I am also there in case of accidents, I can distract the rest of the class while the teacher is dealing with the incident.

I have experiences from mission trips and other volunteer work days that have taught me a lot. On these days I have painted houses, cleaned, picked up trash and sticks. I have used a weed-eater, as well as a pruning sheers. I have worked outside on very hot days, clearing large branches/trees and throwing them into a fire. I can organize, write, and work well with people but most importantly, I will do what is asked of me to the best of my abilities.

Government 1A Essay 8

“Price controls are people controls.”

People are born with natures, certain habits engrained in us that we do naturally. Everything has a nature. People, government, prices. It is the governments nature to control, especially people because people can oppose them. The government wants to control the people because they are frightened of the power they know we possess. It is in the peoples nature to desire freedom for ourselves, if we take it one step further, we desire it for others as well. The issue is agreeing on a certain viewpoint and what freedom means for people. So why would people desire to have price or people controls? We desire to do good for others but often we know that we are lacking. In an attempt to help their community, people may look to the government to do it for them because the government has the power and resources to do so.

“For example, the nature of price controls is people control. A quart of
milk or an aspirin obviously is not concerned about the price tag it carries. Prices are of concern only to human beings. And the only thing that can be controlled by government in this process of minimum and maximum prices is people.”
– Joel McDurmon

If the government comes in to control prices you might as well call it what it is, people control. If the government locks in a price of a certain item this means that a person, most likely a production owner, legally can not change the price of their own product. The only way that the price can change is if the government changed it for them. This does not just apply to products, what about housing? What if the government controlled rent? If the government controlled rent they are saying they want to control the people living in the house. If they get control over the people, they will exploit that power in any way they can.

“The nature of all governmental schemes to “support prices” is this: Some people who control the police powers of government use them to take money from other people who have earned it, and to give it to still other people who have not earned it. That’s all it is. Calling it by another name cannot change its nature, for better or for worse.” – Joel McDurmon

In the end the government has a controlling nature, it wants power. The truth is, when we allow the government to control our prices, we are inadvertently allowing them to control us.

English 4 Essay 7

Topic: “If you had been a member of the General Court, how would this sermon have influenced your politics? Why?”

Cotton Mather was a preacher born in Boston in the 1700’s. He was the author of Theopolis Americana, which he wrote in 1710. He spoke mostly of his religious beliefs, as well as some of his political policies. Mather believed that society should treat others as Christ treated people. He believed in the Golden Rule, that all should be treated the way you should be treated. He called this the “golden rule of Christ.” He especially believed this in the trade system. He thought that businesses should see their customers as their neighbors and as people, not as their next big sale.

Something that Mather was completely opposed to was slavery. This was extremely radical for the time and he had a completely opposite view from the majority. He saw slavery for what it is, a complete disregard for human life, an abomination that should make everyone sick. The African slave trade consisted of kidnapping someone from a different continent and Mather saw it no differently than kidnapping your neighbors child. The slave trade is completely corrupted because it is a corrupt ideology to begin with.

While Mather had some incredible ideas, his ideology was not always good. He believed that the Jews would one day completely convert to Christianity, almost as if he forgot that people have the freedom to believe whatever they may choose. Once this happened the world would become a garden for God, Jerusalem would be rebuilt, and New England would have its roads paved, metaphorically, with gold. This sermon was never released to the public, and near the end of his life Mather retracted his support of this belief.

If I were a member of the court the first thing I would see was Mathers incredible love for people. He wanted to do right by people and keep peace and prosperity flowing for generations to come. I would agree with his beliefs about the market and slave trade, admiring his courage for not conforming to the ways of the world. I would however question his beliefs about the Jews. Why he believed this, where he got the evidence from, etc. I would want to ask him some questions in this particular area such as where in the Bible does it say the Jews will convert? Where does it say Jerusalem will be rebuilt? At the end of the day I would be proud that there was a man like Mather leading part of the people. I agree with him that all people should be treated fairly with respect and love.

Government 1A Essay 7

“Who should have the authority to set prices, the free market or the state? Why?”

My question is are we living in a world where the state is producing the products or the free market? Believe it or not, whoever controls the production process impacts the entire system. When the state is controlling the production process, it has the authority to set the prices. However this means that they are the only available organization to buy from. When there is only one production line to buy from, they can set the price as high as they want and people will still buy from them. Why? It is the only way they can get their products. Not only will the prices be high but the production is not going to be as quick as several people making the same product.

If we eliminate the state controlling the production, there will be better production rate. Even then why does the state have a say in what the price should be? What benefits come from that process? When the state has control over the pricing of products, they are still going to keep the prices high at every single business. Some of the money would go to the business owner but a large portion would go to the state.

When the state makes the products and gives up the control of pricing, it will still be high because it is the only product the people can obtain. When a private business controls the production and the pricing there is a higher chance of success. The owner knows what the product is valued at. A private business also thinks of what the majority of the public wants, they think of the middle class. In a free society, you had better have good products and good pricing because there is always someone who can do it better than you. As a result of this system, people get their product at a better value and business owners get a fair wage.

The states real objective is to make money. When the state controls prices, they get a large percentage of that money. Government should exist to protect the natural rights of all their citizens. Setting prices is not a way of protection, it is a means of control.

English 4 Essay 6

“In what ways was Penn an advocate of middle class morality?”

While writing his book, The Fruits of Solitude, Penn described the morals he believed would make a great society. These morals would be be the foundation, engrained in what Penn believed to be a perfect society. Penn was one of the first Quaker leaders and he strongly believed in his faith. He was put in jail for his differing beliefs while in England. He was willing to die standing up for what he believed in. Penn would not back down. His courage was something that he proved to be rooted in his real life, as well as his morals. He did not seem afraid to challenge others and their beliefs, while reinforcing his own.

One of Penn’s main principals was walking the tightrope of middle ground. Penn believed that there should be balance in life. Life requires us to make sacrifices, especially self sacrifice. Penn believed that charity was essential to prove that you were a good neighbor. But he also believed that a person should not sacrifice so much to the point where they are physically or mentally burdened. Penn believed that one has the need for some possessions, but not too many. If one wants to grow in maturity, they must seek after adventure but go about it wisely, not blindly.

Gluttony was something that Penn fought against. Instead of gorging on food, he believed it should be enjoyed. His method of eating was not to eat until you felt full, but until you were able to feel a slight amount of delight. This would ensure that at your next meal you would be truly hungry and much more appreciative of what you had. This was an exercise of self control that Penn believed would bring more satisfaction for people.

Penn was a strong believer that marriage should be for love. He despised the thought of marrying for money, and did not believe that people should have lust or an overly fiery passion for each other. Penn believed that both partners should be satisfied with themselves, so that they could be content with each other. One of Penn’s beliefs about marriage was extremely radical for his time. He believed that one partner did not have more authority than the other. He believed that both were equal in their own ways.

Wisdom was perhaps one of the things Penn craved the most. He treasured wisdom and believed that knowledge was only a part of the equation. Just because you know something doesn’t mean you live it out. In order to gain wisdom he believed you needed to apply the knowledge you learned to your real life. There is a saying that goes, “You haven’t learned if you haven’t changed.”
